“dirty nails (les ongles noirs) at the Market”

11am – 1pm

Bullring Open Market Edgbaston Street

Artists Jade Blackstock and melissandre varin with Geamhradhr/Winter perform in the Bullring Open Market using molasses, indigo, olive oil and oranges – materials which hold histories of transatlantic trade, colonisation and displacement, and speak to restitution and Land Back.

melissandre varin's performance combines elements to form a prayer for environmental justice and freedom with voice and body, to call deeper attention through small gestures to the ever-so-present sources of collective grief surrounding us.

Blue tarpaulin represents climate change and migration – the water as graveyard.

Oranges relate to the focal point of energy in the body – the sacral chakra – to pleasure, fertility, and the element of water, the impossibility of growing roots in a foreign land, to be a new settler on the land, orange peel is a companion and for the artist is a symbol of a child lost through stillbirth.

Palestinian Olive Oil recalls the ongoing violation of land and lives by oppressive powers.

Jade Blackstock used to come to the Bull Ring outdoor market every weekend as a child. Her performance reclaims the space of the market by making a new memory here, not tied to her past.

To the artist, molasses possess time-warping qualities. They have a long history of being used in acts of resistance in the Caribbean.

Indigo was originally grown in India and West Africa. It became a key trade commodity cultivated and processed by enslaved people in Jamaica and other Caribbean islands – before enslavers decided sugar was more profitable and replaced it.

Branches are connected to the roots, they reach out from the body of the tree. The artist’s name, Blackstock, means ‘man who lives by the blackened treestump’. Jamaica is described as the land of wood and water by its indigenous people. Branches that are no longer attached to the tree have come adrift from family connections.
